Hiberno-Norse Phase III, Class E, Plain bust, Type 2b – Quatrefoil on Neck, Long Cross with one hand, one pellet and ‘S’
Description:
Hiberno-Norse coinage, silver penny, Phase III, Class E (Plain bust with symbol – crude quatrefoil on neck) – Long Cross with one hand, one pellet and the symbol ‘S’ on reverse. Badly blundered legends on both obverse and reverse – undecipherable.
Obverse:
- Stylised bust of Ethelred II, imitating earlier Phase I types.
- Symbol on neck – quatrefoil.
- Blundered Legend: + DNITIIEIM:TEN:D
Reverse:
- Long cross, imitating earlier Phase I Long Cross type.
- One hand, one pellet and the symbol ‘S’ within the quadrants of the cross.
- Blundered Legend: + IIO D_II ITII LDI
