Description:

Kilkenny Rebel Money Shilling; issued by the Catholic Confederacy of Kilkenny from 1642-43 and counter-marked on a base Shilling of Elizabeth I (her first issue of base coinage for Ireland, in 1558); the counter-mark is struck on either side of the monarch’s bust in the form of a raised “K” on a castle (double mark to signify a shilling?)

Well-struck on a slightly smaller flan than expected.

  • Very Fine (VF) for the issue
  • An uncertain piece, but the countermarks are well struck and appear to be contemporary
  • Extremely rare and seldom seen at auction

Obverse:

  • Crowned and mantled bust left
    • Legend is unclear / weakly struck coin
    • the countermark is usually struck on either side of the monarch’s bust in the form of a raised “K” on a castle (double mark to signify a shilling?). In this instance,there are no counter-marks over or to the side of the bust.

Reverse:

  • Crowned harp
  • Crowned “E” to left and crowned “R” to right
    • Legend is unclear / weakly struck coin
    • the countermark is usually struck on either side of the monarch’s bust in the form of a raised “K” on a castle (double mark to signify a shilling?). In this instance, it is counter-marked either side of the harp on the reverse.
